Choosing a shed usually starts with the practical stuff.
How big does it need to be? Where will it sit? What needs to fit inside?
Then comes a question that's a little more fun — what colour should it be?
It might seem like a small detail, but your shed is going to be part of your backyard for years to come. The right colour can help it blend into the garden, complement your home or even become a feature in its own right.
And with everything from classic dark tones to greens, greys and lighter neutrals available across the Duratuf ranges, there's plenty to choose from.
Why Shed Colour Matters More Than You Think
Take a look around your backyard.
There's probably already a colour palette there — your roof, weatherboards or brick, window frames, fencing, deck, landscaping and planting all contribute to how the space feels.
Your shed becomes part of that picture too.
That's why many homeowners choose a shed colour that connects with something already on the property. It might match the roof or joinery, sit quietly against the fence, or use a natural green to settle into a leafy corner of the garden.
There's no one right answer. It's really about choosing something that feels at home in your space.
The Colours Kiwi Homeowners Are Loving
If you're drawn to darker exteriors, you're certainly not alone.
Ebony is currently our most popular Duratuf colour, followed by Grey Friars and Ironsand. Nightfall — similar to FlaxPod — is another colour we're seeing become increasingly popular.
It's easy to see why.
Dark greys and blacks work particularly well with many of the materials already found around Kiwi homes, from timber and brick to corrugated steel and modern weatherboards. They can give a shed a clean, contemporary look without demanding too much attention.
But darker isn't the only way to go.
If your shed will sit among trees, hedging or established planting, colours like Mist Green, Permanent Green or Lichen can help it settle naturally into the garden.
For something lighter, Gull Grey, Sandstone Grey or Titania can work beautifully alongside softer exterior palettes.
Match It, Blend It or Make It Your Own
A good place to start is deciding what you want your shed to do visually.
Match your home
Look at the colours that aren't likely to change anytime soon — your roof, cladding, bricks, window joinery or fence.
Choosing a similar shed colour can make a new building feel like it has always belonged there.
Ironsand, Grey Friars and Sandstone Grey are versatile options that can work with many brick, weatherboard and roughcast homes.
Let it disappear into the garden
Not every shed needs to stand out.
If it's going beside a hedge, down the back of the section or surrounded by planting, try a more natural colour such as Mist Green, Permanent Green or Lichen.
Sometimes the best-looking shed is the one you barely notice.
Try a two-tone look
Here's where things get interesting.
Our Lifestyle and Kiwi Range gives you plenty of freedom to mix and match your cladding and door colours.
You might keep the shed itself dark and introduce a lighter door, or choose contrasting colours that pick up different elements of your home.
One example is our Fendalton Lifestyle Shed in Ebony cladding with a Titania door — a simple contrast that completely changes the personality of the shed.
Different Shed, Different Colour Options
Not every Duratuf range has the same colour palette.
Our Lifestyle Range gives you the most choice, with 17 painted cladding colours plus Zinc/Aluminium and plenty of scope to mix and match your cladding and doors.
The Kiwi Range comes standard in a two-tone finish, with a selection of popular single-tone options also available.
Our Eco ranges — Sentry, Smartstore, Guardian and Garrison — keep things simpler with a smaller, carefully selected palette of popular shed colours.
So if colour is particularly important to your project, it's worth thinking about it while you're choosing your shed range rather than leaving it until the very end.
Don't Choose Your Colour From a Screen
This is probably our biggest piece of advice.
See the colour for yourself.
Colours on a phone or computer screen aren't always a perfect representation of how they'll look once they're outside.
Natural light can make a big difference too. A colour you love in bright midday sun might feel quite different in the softer light of the morning or evening.
That's exactly why we offer free Duratuf colour samples.
Take your samples outside. Hold them against your fence, house cladding or roof colour. Walk to the spot where you're planning to put the shed and see how they look against the surroundings.
Then check them again at another time of day.
It's a simple step, but when you're choosing something you'll be looking at for years, it's worth getting right.
Find Your Colour
Whether you want your shed to blend quietly into the garden, match your home or make a statement of its own, there's a Duratuf colour to help bring the whole project together.
And if you're stuck between Ebony and Grey Friars — or wondering whether that green really will work beside the hedge — don't guess.
Get the samples and see them at your place.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Can I mix and match colours on my Duratuf shed?
On the Lifestyle Range, yes — cladding and door colours can generally be chosen independently for a two-tone look. Kiwi sheds come standard as two-tone, with some common single-tone options available too. Sentry, Smarstore, Garrison and Guardian (Eco Range) have a smaller palette with less scope for mixing.
Is the Zinc/Aluminium finish a colour?
It’s an uncoated, non-rust finish rather than a painted colour. It’s available across Kiwi, Lifestyle, and the Eco ranges, and is usually the lowest-cost option.
Does Guardian have fewer colours than Kiwi or Lifestyle
Yes. Guardian and Sentry are semi-timber-frame “Eco” sheds with a curated five-colour-plus-Zinc palette, while Kiwi and Lifestyle (full-timber-frame ranges) offer significantly more options.
Where can I buy a Duratuf shed in these colours?
Guardian is sold exclusively through Mitre 10 and Sentry exclusively through Bunnings. Kiwi & Lifestyle are available more broadly, including at Bunnings and Mitre10, as well as through Duratuf Specialist Dealers throughout the country. Find your nearest dealer here.
Can I see the colours in person before ordering?
Yes — Duratuf offers a free colour sample request so you can check tones under natural light before committing, since steel colours can look different indoors versus outdoors.
