From No Garage to Dream Backyard Workshop: A Christchurch Customer Story

Discover how one Christchurch family's search for a simple storage shed became a long-term investment in a versatile backyard workshop designed to grow with their lifestyle. Through Chris's real customer story, this article explores why many Kiwi homeowners are choosing timber-framed kitset sheds that offer secure bike and tool storage today while providing the flexibility to become a DIY workshop, hobby room or man cave in the future.

Learn practical shed planning tips, the benefits of customising your design with the Duratuf 3D Shed Builder, insights into the New Zealand building consent exemptions for detached buildings up to 30m² (where exemption conditions and all applicable regulations are met), and why planning for tomorrow's needs can help you build a shed you'll enjoy for many years to come.

17 July 2026

If you asked us what people wanted when they first started looking for a shed, you’d probably expect us to say “more storage.” And you’d be right… sort of.

People ring us because the bikes need somewhere to live. The lawn mower is taking up too much room. The tools are scattered between the carport and the laundry, and the camping gear seems to have claimed permanent residency in the spare room. The conversation almost always starts with solving a practical problem.

What we’ve learnt after more than 30 years of building sheds for Kiwi families is that it rarely ends there.

Chris’s story is a perfect example.

When Chris and his family moved into their Christchurch home, they quickly realised there was one thing the property didn’t have—a garage.

There was a carport, but it didn’t offer the security or protection they needed for the kids’ bikes, tools and outdoor equipment. Like many Christchurch homeowners Chris simply wanted somewhere that would keep everything organised, dry and out of the weather.

At first glance, it sounded like a straightforward storage project.

It turned out to be much more than that.

As we talked through what Chris wanted, the conversation naturally shifted from what he needed today to what he might want tomorrow.

Yes, he needed somewhere secure to store the bikes and tools. But he also liked the idea of having a space where he could work on projects, enjoy a bit of DIY and, eventually, set up a proper workshop or man cave. Not immediately—but somewhere down the track when the time was right.

It’s a conversation we’ve had hundreds of times over the years.

People often start by asking about storage.

Then they begin imagining possibilities.

That’s one of the reasons our timber-framed Lifestyle Sheds have become so popular. They give people options. You don’t have to line the walls, install insulation and fit power on day one. You can do those things over time, as your needs change and your budget allows. The important part is building a shed that’s ready to grow with you, rather than one you’ll outgrow in a couple of years.

If there’s one piece of advice we find ourselves giving more than any other, it’s this: Build the shed you’ll want in five years, not just the one you need today.

Chris spent time designing a shed that suited both his property and the way he planned to use it. Using our free 3D Shed Builder, he customised the layout and ordered a shed that ticked all the boxes.

As the project got underway, though, he started thinking more about how the space would be used in the years ahead. While the shed would initially provide secure storage for the bikes, tools and outdoor gear, the long-term vision was always to create a versatile workshop and, eventually, a bit of a man cave where he could enjoy working on projects and spending time.

With that in mind, Chris realised a ranch slider would suit the shed much better than the original roller door. He wasn’t planning on parking vehicles or storing a ride-on mower inside, so having an easy-to-use entrance that made the shed feel more like a room than a garage simply made more sense.

There was just one small catch.

Because the change was made after the shed had gone into production, one of the steel frame components above the doorway had already been manufactured to suit the original roller door opening.

Chris gave us a call.

Once we confirmed the issue, our team manufactured the correct replacement steel sheet and had it on its way to Christchurch. Just three days later it arrived on site, the sheet was swapped over and the build carried on with very little disruption.

To us, that’s just part of looking after our customers.

Things change. Plans evolve. The important thing is making sure those changes don’t become bigger problems than they need to be.

One thing that surprised Chris was just how straightforward the build turned out to be.

Like plenty of people tackling their first kitset shed, he expected it to be more complicated than it actually was. Instead, every piece of timber arrived precision-cut, with detailed instructions that made each stage of the build easy to follow.

His description of the experience still makes us smile.

“It’s like grown-ups’ LEGO.”

We’ll happily take that as a compliment.

A lot of work goes into making a build feel simple. Precision manufacturing, quality materials and clear instructions don’t happen by accident, but when they’re done well, they let people focus on enjoying the project rather than trying to figure out what goes where.

Today, Chris’s shed is already doing exactly what he hoped it would.

The bikes finally have somewhere secure to live. The tools are organised. Everything stays dry and protected from Canterbury’s ever-changing weather.

But perhaps the most interesting part is that the project still isn’t finished.

The plan has always been to install power, line the inside and gradually turn the space into the workshop Chris imagined from the very beginning. That’s the beauty of planning ahead. The shed works perfectly today, but it’s also ready for whatever comes next.

We’ve watched that story unfold time and time again.

What starts as somewhere to store the bikes slowly becomes the place where projects get built, hobbies are discovered and Saturday mornings quietly disappear.

Funny how that happens.

We’ve noticed something else over the last few years as well.

More and more Kiwi families are choosing to improve the homes they already love instead of moving somewhere bigger. Adding a well-designed shed creates valuable, flexible space without extending the house, and for many homeowners it’s one of the smartest investments they can make.

For many homeowners, projects like Chris's have become easier to plan thanks to recent changes to New Zealand's building consent exemptions for many detached buildings up to 30m² (provided all exemption requirements and other applicable regulations are met). Whether you're dreaming of a workshop, bike shed, garden storage or a dedicated hobby space, it's a great time to start thinking about how a shed could work for your property.

The important part isn’t simply adding another building to your property.

It’s creating a space that’s genuinely useful.

If you’re thinking about building your own shed, we’d encourage you to spend just as much time thinking about the future as you do about today’s storage problem.

Will the kids always have bikes?

Will you eventually want a workbench?

Could the shed become a hobby room, a workshop or simply somewhere to escape for an hour on a Saturday afternoon?

Those are the conversations worth having before the first screw goes in.

If you’re not sure where to start, have a play with our free 3D Shed Builder. You can customise the size, layout, doors and windows, experiment with different options and start building a shed that’s designed around the way you live—not just the way you store things.

And if you’d rather chat it through first, that’s what we’re here for.

After helping Kiwi families build sheds for more than 30 years, we’ve learnt that no two projects are ever quite the same.

That’s exactly how it should be.
